BACKGROUND: Employers have long been concerned about the professional qualifications of their employees. Decision makers in the health sciences are no exception, particularly now that they are seriously considering the improvement and full accreditation of continuing education as part of the planned European convergence. METHOD: Medical and nursing professionals were questioned about their views on continuing education, suitable content of possible programs, and implementation, in comparison to what four major Spanish nursing and medical journals propose as adequate continuing education activities. RESULTS: Responses from both types of professionals indicated that they desire training more related to practice and to social communication issues. CONCLUSIONS: Health professionals feel that they need to stay current in their fields and that continuing education programs should be systematized in consonance with official accreditation guidelines and objectives.

Con la revisión por expertos una revista intenta garantizar que los artículos publicados tienen calidad. Este artículo pretende analizar el difícil trabajo de evaluación en el ámbito de la enfermería española. Presentamos algunas sugerencias sobre cómo desempeñar esta función, a la vista de datos recogidos de revistas españolas, y así contribuir a la mejora de las publicaciones en enfermería. Se presenta asimismo una encuesta realizada por contacto personal con revistas relevantes con unas recomendaciones puntuales para los profesionales de enfermería (AU)
Through peer review a journal tries to guarantee the quality of published articles. This paper intends to analyze the difficult assessment task in the Spanish nursing area. We also present some suggestions on how to develop this task, based on data gathered from Spanish nursing journals, and thus contribute to enhance nursing publications. We also give the results of a questionnaire made by personal contact with relevant Spanish journals, along with specific recommendations for nursing professionals (AU)
